Crystal looked around briefly, wondering who David was talking to, but after quickly realizing that everyone around her was absorbed in their food, quite literally, she smiled and looked up at him. "I did that the first week of the holidays. I wasn't allowed out on the farm until I'd done it. It took me forever though, all those stupid experiments to write up and a whole essay on gillyweed. She must think we're robots or something. As if we actually like writing essays." she said, looking at his face for the first time close up. Perfect smile and perfect teeth, each freckle placed carefully over his face, his eyes not too close together but perfectly separated and a beautiful chocolate brown. His hair, messed up and natural lay just above his eyebrows, perfectly placed, just like everything else about him. Perfect.

David smiled again, conscious of her eyes on his features but not knowing quite what to say. He settled for running his hand through his hair, giving it a good ruffle on the way. "Erm...What's it like living on a farm?" he ventured, hoping it was the right thing to say. He didn't often get to talk to any girls apart from Timmy...
...who was eyeing the conversation with interest, and a wry smile. "I'd better go check my History essay over," she said to no-one in particular. "See you guys later!" She swung her legs over the bench and, winking at Helena, gave David another slightly more violent ruffle on the way out of the Great Hall.

Crystal smiled slightly at Timmy's playful ruffle of David's hair, wishing she could do the same.... What? What was I thinking? she asked herself half disgusted at what she had just thought, half wishing that she could... "Oh, erm, yeah it's good. Busy but good fun. There's always something to do, especially in the spring and summer. Pigs to feed, cows to calf, seeds to sow and harvest and all those other boring jobs. But I like it. I'd rather be there now, than stuck here." Even though you've just made my life a whole lot better, even by just talking to me. "Don't get me wrong, Hogwarts it great, but ...." she sighed deeply "You must have seen how useless I am." Crystal was, of course, referring to her utter lack of magical ability. Everyone in the whole year knew how useless she was, from being knocked backwards into a bookcase in defence against the dark arts to not even being able to produce the simplest of charms.

'I wouldn't worry about it too much,' mumbled Helena through a large slice of chocolate muffin. 'It's only important when it gets to practical exams. Then you might need some help.' She glanced over to the Slytherin table, spying Vik looking sheepish next to a large seventh year who was, surprisingly, trying to make conversation. Dark conversation, but conversation none the less. The Gryffindor smiled. Maybe she'll make some friends in her own house, eventually.

David nodded in agreement as he finished his plate. "Besides, you're always getting top marks for homework, and you're anything but hopeless in Potions and Herbology," he said simply, trying not to recall his incident with the jumping toadstools last term.
"Anyway, we'd better get going. Ready for an hour of incredibly interesting and witty learning?" he grinned at Crystal, left eyebrow raised. [in a very cute and sexy and gorgeous way]

Crystal had to turn away at that point to hide her blush. She wasn't used to having this much attention, let alone from a boy. And David aswell! Things were looking up this term and it had only been a few hours since it's beginning. Quickly she swung her legs over the bench and slung her bag onto her shoulder, taking a few deep breaths as she did so, desperately trying to stop her face from burning up. Turning back to David she smiled sweetly and turned towards the door, "see ya later Helena" Crystal shouted behind her as she walked alongside David. "You can call me Crys, by the way. Slightly easier than Crystal." Argh, shut up. Why do I always have to say such stupid things? Biting the insides of her cheeks she kept her mouth shut along the corridors to History, hoping he would talk again. Hoping she could hear his voice talking to her, and only her, just one more time...

OOC: I can so see her walking into a suit of armour at this rate. Bit of autoing, hope you don't mind. BIC: David grinned in response, before a girl in the same Hufflepuff robes crashed into him, somehow managing to push Crystal into a nearby suit of armour at the same time. "Oh - so sorry, darling," the girl said carelessly over her shoulder, smiling at David all the while. "Say, David, that Transfiguration homework was soo hard, and I was wondering if you could help me just a little bit, 'cos I never seem to get the wand movement right, and maybe if you showed me - is tonight good?" She finally stopped for a breath, keeping her beady eyes on David's face. "Erm..." David scratched his ear absent-mindedly, nervously glancing at the gang of Hufflepuffs in the corner pretending not to watch. "...I'm really sorry Becky, but I'm kinda busy tonight - " "Oh? What're you up to so early in the term?" Becky asked innocently, pointedly ignoring Crystal's muffled cries on the floor. "Erm...I, erm, already said I'd, erm, help... Crystal!" Taking advantage of the stunned shock on Becky's face, David sidestepped her and quickly helped Crystal out of the pile of metal. Still very much aware of the Hufflepuff girls' stares, he put on his best apologetic face. "Yeah, I told Crystal that I'd give her a bit of help with Charms...erm...really sorry 'bout that - " "Oh alright then," replied Becky with barely concealed contempt. "Can't say she doesn't need it!" The rest of the gang smothered their giggles as Becky, with a flirtatious wink at David and a smirk at Crystal, stalked past the two into the classroom. David sighed and waited for Crystal to pick up her things. "You don't mind, do you?" he asked suddenly. "It's just she's been bugging me ever since the Ball, and...well, I'm sorry I got you involved. But we could go to the library or something if you want?" he said softly, his brown eyes concerned and genuine.

"Err, yeah. That'd be great. But don't expect any miracles just because your teaching me." Crystal said, trying to straighten out her hair, not quite sure exactly what had happened.
Having eventually picked up the contents of her bag Crys led the way into the classroom, ignoring the giggles from the Hufflepuff girls and sending a hard glare in the direction of Becky. Stuck up brat. Next time I'll give her what's coming... she thought menacingly, but quickly calmed herself with the fact of spending more time with David. To think, this morning he hardly knew who she was and now they'd be spending the evening together! Crystal was completely overwhelmed.

David grinned in relief as he followed Crys, returning a friendly wave to his Hufflepuff mates before they got back to arguing about Quidditch.
"Oi! David! Crystal! Over here!" Window seats! Nice one, Timmy. David led Crys over and pulled out the middle chair for her, giving a mock bow as he did so.

Crys smiled, nearly blushed again, and sat down. Flicking her hair out of her face she leant down to get out her giant history text book and her new quill. It had been a Christmas present form her sister, a long thin feather coloured in blue, turquoise and green stripes. Her sister had been showing particular promise for magic since she was smaller, unlike herself of her older brother. He was just like his father, nonmagical and a complete Mane, farmer by nature and nurture. Her sister was younger, slimmer and more magical than Crystal, but thank goodness she didn't have the intelligence. Crys would die of jealousy. It had always been a mystery to the family why Crys had been accepted into Hogwarts. She had never shown any of the qualities any normal witch of her age would, only a slight ability to fly and even she got a little paranoid if she stayed in the air for too long.
Most of the other students in Crystal's class hated history. They said it was "the most boring subject in the history of boring stuff" especially since Professor Binns had started droning on about goblin rebellions. Crys found it quite easy though, not because it was interesting, but she found it relatively easy to memorize facts and dates and write long winded essays on nothing in particular.
And so the lesson began, the ghostly professor appearing through the board and writing a date from long ago on it, before droning on and on in his monotonous voice, sending most of the pupils to sleep. Crystal made a few notes on the important facts and payed attention for most of the lesson, only letting her eyes wonder a few times to the window and the frozen wonderland outside.
The lesson ended with some pages from the text book to read and the promise of one of the last goblin rebellions to study in the next lesson, before a huge essay to write, which would be marked and go towards their end of year examinations.
Crys grabbed her books and got up from the table, poking the person in front of her in the back to wake them up, so they wouldn't look like an idiot when everyone else escaped form the classroom and onto charms.

Timmy allowed herself a yawnsome stretch before jumping to her feet and poking David hard in the ribs - then ducked quickly to avoid his flailing counter-attack as he jerked awake with a amused sideways glare. Resigned, David dragged himself off his chair and held the door open for the two ladies, giving a "She's always like this" look to Crys as they made their way to the third floor.
They were already a couple of minutes late as they burst into the Charms classroom, earning a disapproving look from Professor Weasley. After a few muttered apologies, they took the remaining front desk, this time with David in the middle. Professor Weasley raised an eyebrow at this new arrangement but ignored it, returning to the blackboard.
"As I was saying, today you will be continuing the practical aspect of Colour Charms. I'd like you to get into pairs to practise the following Hair Colour incantation..." As the professor turned to the board once more, Timmy noticed a rather lost-looking David glancing to either side of him worriedly. She smirked, meeting and keeping his eyes. "Well, go on then," she whispered with a wink, before shifting her chair backwards to partner another Ravenclaw boy.
Deeply relieved that he didn't have to choose, David turned back to Crys with a warm smile. "Let's get started then," he said brightly, tapping his wand on her long hair and making the tips go purple.

Crys managed to smile weakly at David, glad that he wanted to work with her, but also terrified that she would embarrass herself like she did every lesson. She took her oak wand out of her pocket and gathered up her courage. Crys clearly said the incantation and tapped David's perfect hair, concentrating hard on a bright pink. But nothing. No sparks, no bang and certainly no colour change. Crystal's eyes dropped to her feet and she let a large sigh escape her lips. What a surprise! her mocking inner self said sarcastically. "Sorry" she muttered to David, hardly being able to bare being in his presence anymore.

David's eyes flicked upwards, expecting to see at least some kind of change - Crys's casting of the spell seemed accurate enough... Nothing? Strange. He noticed her downcast eyes and smiled. "What for?" he asked, raising his eyebrow. "Unless you've turned my hair green... you haven't, have you?" he said in mock horror. Seeing that it didn't have any effect on Crys's mood, he squeezed her hand gently. "Don't worry about it. We can have a look in the library next, see if there's anything that could help - if you're still up for it?"

"Yeah" Crys said with more confidence, slightly happier after he had squeezed her hand, on the outside at least. Inside she was screaming with joy, but she didn't want to show it. Instead she tried a few more times to turn his hair bright pink, failing of course, and allowed him to change her hair from purple to blue to green and every other colour imaginable. David said she looked best in lilac, to which Crys blushed again. The lesson ended and all hair had to be returned to it's original colour before they left the classroom, Professor Weasley checking as they went out of the door.
Crys and David made their way up a floor to the library, finding a small table out of sight of the librarian, Madam Pince, and her beady-eyed gaze.
"So.... How do you want to start?" Crys said, daring to look into David's entrancing eyes again and finding her insides melt in his gaze.

"No idea," David replied cheerfully. "We'll make it up as we go along..."
They spent at least two hours in the library, poring over books and hiding their wands whenever Madam Pince stalked past. Timmy joined them after a while, refreshing their supplies of chocolate; when she saw that Crys really wasn't getting anywhere, even with David's best efforts and warmest grins, a determined look came onto Timmy's face. "I think this has happened before..." she muttered, making her way into the deepest corners of the library while David threw Crys an apologetic smile. "She gets like that," he half-explained, as he turned to yet another page of spells.
Still, they parted on good terms that night, after dragging Timmy out of a rather cobwebbed reading hole and running away from Madam Pince's duster - "I swear it had teeth and everything!" David yelled, bounding down the staircase - and before they went to their separate common rooms, he took Crys's hands once more. "Thanks for the evening," he said softly, bringing a hand to his lips; then leaving the two girls in the Entrance Hall as he strolled happily down to his dormitory.
Timmy had looked away at that, moving slowly towards the western passageway to Ravenclaw Tower with a sad smile on her face. "Come on then," she called over her shoulder when she heard David's retreating footsteps. "Best get back before the prefects catch us," she said, making sure her happy face was back on by the time a very happy Crys reached her side.
Timmy stayed awake a long time that night.

Crys smiled too, warmth flourishing in her heart. But she saw it. The sadness in Timmy's eyes was too strong for her to hide. Admittedly it had been a great evening but now guilt spread through her. She should never have tried to become friends with David, no matter how wonderful it was. Was she that desperate for friends and support? No, I couldn't have been she tried to think, but it was too hard to lie to herself. She had been desperate. She had been longing to be accepted into Hogwarts, even if she wasn't a witch. She wanted so badly to have what everyone else had, and now she had something no one else could have she wanted to get rid of it. It was clear that Timmy and Becky envied her and she hated it. She just wanted to melt into the background for once, not be noticed. To just be normal. She listened to the cold night and the other girls turning in their sleep and let her hand slip under her pillow. Slowly she dragged out an old picture frame containing her most treasured possession. The figure in the battered photograph smiled and waved from the middle of a field, but then something strange began to happen to her. She leaped forward in slow motion and began to change shape quite rapidly. Long, thick, dark brown hair began to cover her body and her arms grew to the same length as her legs. Her neck lengthened too and arched, longer hair growing down the back of it. Long, pointed ears grew on top of the woman's head, which lengthened considerably. Gracefully she landed on her new, four feet and swished her long tail. Tall and elegant the horse looked stunning and happy. Crys stared longingly at the figure, her mother, and a single tear crept out of her eye and made its streaky path down her face. She could sit and stare at it all night, like she had done most nights of last term, but this was now, not then and it was different, she was different... *** The crisp February morning arrived, and Crystal was feeling nervous. Again. She’d felt this way for about a week now, putting it off, almost avoiding David because of it. But today she’d ask him she had to. If someone hadn’t asked him first. What do I say to him? she thought frantically now, come on. We’ve already been through all this! the other half of her replied. Arguments inside her head raged as she carefully brushed her hair, trying not to pull too much out. It always happened at this time of the year. It went on for a few months, starting slowly and gently increasing until about May when it suddenly stopped. Crys looked at her hairbrush, covered in hair, and ran her fingers through the rest of her hair, pulling out another handful. By the summer it would be considerably thinner, but it wasn’t particularly a bad thing. She’d hate to have thick hair in the summer. It’d stick to her neck and get in the way. She preferred it slightly thinner. After gently pulling her hair into two French plaits she made her way down to breakfast. She wore dark blue jeans, a turquoise, long sleeved T-shirt, a blue fleece and her well worn walking shoes, but didn’t look out of place. Most people were huddling in scarves and hats in the corridors, crowding around the small fireplaces that were dotted around. The tall girl stepped into the Great Hall and walked over to the closest end of the Ravenclaw table. Among the floating candles small hearts floated through the air and small, shining ones littered the tables. The 14th of February had never meant anything to Crys before, but now it seemed like the most nerve-wracking day of her life. Sitting down she helped herself to a little porridge and watched the entrance for David to enter.

For the fifth time that morning, David found himself no more than a step out of the common room before running back to his dorm to check his hair, or change his jacket, or make sure a spot hadn't materialised in the ten seconds since he'd last gazed worriedly into the bathroom mirror. His best friend looked up from the latest copy of Which Broomstick? in amusement. "Seriously mate, if you come back here one more time I'll put a ward on that mirror." David turned around, puzzled. "You don't know any wards." "Exactly. Which is why you wouldn't want to walk into any of mine," Nick shot back wryly. David grinned as he sank down on his bed, ruffling his hair absent-mindedly, then suddenly stopping and attempting to smooth it out. Nick rolled his eyes. "Have you even decided who you're going to ask out yet?" "Of course!" A pause. "Well, maybe..." Nick raised his eyebrows. "'Cos if you don't get a move on, I'll decide for you." "Yeah right," David said with an uncertain laugh. "Besides, I thought your heart was set on Elisabeth last week..." The other boy shrugged. "Already gone with Will. The point is," he said, putting his magazine aside and facing David, "you've got to get Becky off your tail. Plus that Ravenclaw girl, Crystal or whatever her name is - I reckon you'd break her heart if you didn't ask. And the other one hasn't shown any interest anyway." "I guess so," David sighed, then checked his reflection one more time and headed for the door. "See you later then," he said over his shoulder, grateful for Nick's help. "And Dave?" He turned to see Nick poking his head round the door. "I wasn't kidding about those wards." David grinned in response before walking as calmly as possible towards the Great Hall. *** Where the hell is he? Timmy peeked out from her hiding place behind a tapestry overlooking the Entrance Hall. For an instant she considered crawling back up the passageway back to her dorm - Perish the thought! Like he'd listen to me if I went and talked to him normally. And for what I've got to say, he'd better be listening.Timmy returned to the book she'd brought with her, glancing down every now and then to check, and very glad she'd thought to cast a cushioning charm. "Aha!" she whispered as a head of tousled brown hair came into view. *** So. This is it then, David said to himself as he neared the Hall. But what about Timmy? another voice said. But Nick was right, she's never said anything, the first voice countered. That doesn't mean... David groaned aloud as the two sides of his head battled for control... "Morning!" David swore and jumped a foot in the air before turning to see Timmy looking down at him for once, her head poking out under a couple of tap-dancing cows. "Erm...yes. Good morning to you too," he said a little irritably as Timmy jumped lightly to the floor. "Any particular reason why..." "Yes." David blinked, and saw an unusually serious look on Timmy's face. Ah. Please don't say what I think you're about to say..."I think," she said softly, "that you should get your arse into that Hall, and..." Timmy chewed her lip hesitantly before carrying on, "And ask Crys out before she starts to think that you won't otherwise she'll... you'll... I'll... yeah." Her last words were directed to her shoes, and she didn't see the large variety of expressions that flitted across David's face before he settled on a small grin. "Thanks, Timmy," he said quietly as she lifted her head, and he was relieved to see that she was smiling too. "Well? Get on with it!" she laughed, pushing him towards the doors, before hugging him and setting off back to Ravenclaw Tower. "And don't you dare break her heart," she warned, only half-joking. David nodded back, and took a deep breath before stepping into the Great Hall.

Crys gasped as David entered, inhaling a spoonful of porridge as she did so. Trying to stifle her chokes she turned bright red in the process, her eyes beginning to water. Damn! she thought that could not have happened at a worse time. Ouch! Still cursing inside her head she breathed deeply, sneaking a look at David through her blurred vision, as her coughing fit continued. He looked great, as usual, but somehow he seemed more serious, his hair was flatter than usual. She still craved ruffling it, but hadn't given into temptation yet. After what seemed like hours, her face having returned to nearly its original colour, though her eyes were still trying to water profusely, she stood up and approached David, who appeared to be looking for someone. Blinking quickly she pushed back the tears. Quickly she checked her voice, narrowly missing croaking at him, and cleared her throat quietly. "David, I was wondering" she looked up into his eyes, hers still slightly red, "if you'd like to come for a walk through the grounds with me? After breakfast that is..."
Most of the other students would be going into Hogsmeade today, the couples sitting in Madam Puddifoot's tea shop, gazing into each other's eyes whilst golden cherubs threw pink confetti over them. Crys hated it. Hogsmeade was too small and too cramped for the whole school to be let loose into the town. She preferred not to be suffocated by the strong smell of tea and scones and have pink confetti matted into her hair. The sound was too much as well. Crys hated loud noises, so huge crowds of buzzing people or loud bangs in Zonko's Joke Shop, were not her idea of a great time. In potions or defence against the dark arts she was always the first to scream out loud if a huge bang emitted from her cauldron or the tip of someone else's wand. Instead she was much happier walking through the grounds, ice skating on the lake, if it was still frozen, and enjoying her day.
