OOC: As the old WTH first years are going up to second year, we can bring in some more first years... I WILL say one thing, though. All the characters last year were in Gryffindor. It might make a nice change if they were in a different house... mine is going in Ravenclaw BTW...
BIC:
Ryan Thompson stood nervously, in the Hogwarts Great Hall, looking out at the anticipation on all the faces. He had never seen as many wizards and witches in the same place. He had grown up in a muggle family in South London, and had the shock of his life near the end of July, when he recieved a letter telling him he was a wizard! He had ont believed it at first, until he had a visit from a huge man, who had stepped out of his fireplace, right into his front room while he was watching TV! He was filled with anticipation, thinking of how well he could do at this new school, with new challenges, new tasks and the like. Professor Clearwater, a tall, thin lady with black curly hair, with hints of grey, stood up and walked up to the front with a small stool and a very battered hat. She placed the hat on top of the stool and said, calmly "Let the Sorting begin!" She unrolled a long piece of parchment and read out the first name on the list. "Abercrombie, Aurelia!" A small girl with dark hair in two plaits running down her back and prominent ears walked calmly to the stool, and placed the hat on her head. The hat twitched and one of its many rips suddenly opened up. It started making murmering sounds, and the rip was moving like a mouth. Then the rip opened wider and shouted "Gryffindor!"

OOC: All Griffies? Ugh. I may have another character sometime who will be a Ravenclaw, but for now...
BIC: As the small girl made her way amongst cheers and applause to the Griffindor table, a tall, thin girl with waist-length black hair sighed slightly and went back to examining her unnaturally long fingers, not caring that a few people next to her were giving her strange glances. In any case, Arienne Snape was hardly a normal eleven year old, and from what she had overheard when she was younger and her parents still alive, she'd be getting quite a few glares from the teachers' table when the Sorting Hat called her name. "Your father was a traitor, Arienne," the young man with glasses had told her. "He deserved to...He deserved what he got." But instead of lashing back, crying, or even looking away, Arienne had stared back into those sad green eyes, wanting to know why... Ari. She turned to see her mother, arms folded, eyes only slightly reddened. "Thank you, Mr. Potter, but we must be going." She took Arienne's hand and led her from the ruined house, not once glancing up to the Mark in the sky... Arienne's eyes glazed over. She shook her head and came out of her thoughts to hear, "Avery, Sallandra," get sorted into Slytherin. Still only down on A! she thought incredulously. Can't they hurry up? Her hand strayed to her wand, but she caught herself in time, reminding herself that she probably wasn't supposed to be able to use magic yet. Growing increasingly bored, Arienne looked around, trying to memorise the faces. She spotted a boy who seemed to be shaking with excitement, anxiety, or both. "Muggle-borns," she muttered. It wasn't that she hated them – indeed, she'd almost hexed a couple of snobbish freaks who'd been silly enough to shout out, “Mudbloods!” on the train – just that they knew nothing about the wizarding world and expected it to be amazing and trouble-free, as if every single problem known to man could be solved by magic. After recent years, wizards and witches all over the world knew better. But none of Arienne’s dark thoughts made any difference to the happy, animated atmosphere in the Great Hall, and she waited patiently for her turn, knowing exactly which house she would be sorted into.

OOC: Glad to have several HP fans here at any rate... Last time I wouldn't've considered putting any characters in any other house than Gryffindor, but now...
BIC: A tall, dark boy stood amongst the crowd near Arienne. He looked around him, his similarly black hair flowing in an otherwise unfelt breeze. It reached down just past his ears, ending in electric blue highlights. His parents often argued with him about why he had had it partially dyed and spiked near the bottom, and he tried his best to ignore them. He was different from them, different from all his family, and didn't want to make things worse. He frowned as student after student was sorted, all into their separate houses. He knew that most of his family would be in Slytherin no contest, but he was disgusted by the thought. He also knew that only one person in his entire family had enrolled in Hogwarts before, and that was years ago, leaving them all with dark experiences. But he felt he would do well here. His clothes hardly fitted, and revealed more of his skinny legs than he'd like them to. Silently, he pointed his wand at the hem. The thread unknotted itself, and started lengthening to sew itself to cover his ankles. He grinned.
A young girl, only coming up to his shoulders, was nudged into him by the crowd of first years. He looked down at her, still frowning. She blushed crimson, and muttered, 'Sorry. Not my fault.' She turned away, and he saw that her ears were also bright red.
His mouth twisted into a sly grin, and he said, quietly, 'Don't worry about it. My name's Edward Venard, Ed for short. What's yours?' She turned around, and giggled. His grin turned into a completely honest smile, which even managed to reach his eyes.
'Never you mind. I expect you'll soon find out anyway,' she whispered, smiling back. They grinned at each other, then turned back to the sorting.

OOC: I have made up a LOAD of first year characters... 40 incl. Rachy and Chlo-chlo's characters, and I can take two out to fit Hanny's and Katie's charries in but it's kinda disappointing that they are both griffies...

Arienne twitched. Was that... She looked around, trying to pinpoint the source of non-verbal magic she'd just felt in the crowd of seemingly innocent firsties. Growing frustrated, she let out a swear word - though to the people around her, it sounded more like a hiss than anything - and suddenly saw him. The only guy there with height, darkness and, if she heard the name right, magical powers similar to her own. Vernard... Definitely rang a few bells. Arienne allowed herself a small smile as she turned back to the sorting. We'll meet. Eventually. Soon.

After "Axtoner, Samson" was sorted into Slytherin, Professor Clearwater called out the name "Bird, Gareth", a sporty looking boy with short hair who was sorted into Hufflepuff. "Boot, Bradley" was sorted into Ravenclaw, "Brunswick, Natalie" was another Hufflepuff. While "Brocklehurst, Andrew" was being sorted, Ryan began to get nervous. He had heard bad things about Slytherin house, and didn't want to be put there... Professor CLearwater cleared her throat and said, "Burns, Luke". A boy with long hair, which covered one of his eyes and stopped at his neck, lumbered up to the stool. Flicking his hair out of his face, he placed the hat on his head. "HUFFLEPUFF!" it shouted moments later. He scowled and walked grumpily to the Hufflepuff table. Clamp, Tarka, Cooper, Elliott, Corona, Carl and Corrigan, Emily were sorted next, and became Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Gryffindor and Hufflepuff, respectively.

As the storing continued and a mixture of tension and excitement rose through the room, Dwyn Williams gazed around nervously at the faces of the surrounding children. What am I doing here? I don't belong in a place like this... the rusty blonde haired girl thought glumly, gazing down at the long, black robe she'd bought only a few days earlier. This just isn't me. How could I ever fit into a place like this...?
The average sized girl gave a quiet sigh, carefully reaching up to adjust her glasses so not to bump the person in front of her. She was grateful that her family had shoveled out so much money to send her to Hogwarts, but, honestly, she'd rather be at home right now with them. They just wanted to give her everything their biological children had had... For Dwyn, though, it was just a reminder of how alone she really was. She loved her family with all her heart but she knew they weren't her real kin. She had no known blood relatives; no family legacy to follow or uphold. Just from hearing other students talking on the train she knew this wasn't so for the majority of them. Many of the children had strong family ties, their older siblings and even parents having attended Hogwarts themselves at one point. Yet there seemed to be a few students that were muggle born, the very idea of “magic” being out-of-this-world to them. They, like Dwyn, had no connections to the history of Hogwarts, but the girl still couldn’t associate herself with any of them. She’d known she was a witch ever since she could remember, just as she’d known that she was adopted. So where did she fit in?
As the sorting continued further and further though and the time for Dwyn to be called drew nearer, the girl began to wonder. Is there a slight chance that somehow, somewhere, I’ll find an answer to my past in this school? It's a long shot, but... who knows? With that in mind she stood still and waited patiently for her placement to be decided. Whichever one she ended up in could be a large deciding factor in her future days at the facility.

Ryan sat down and put the hat on his head. His name had just been called and he had walked calmly to the hat. The hat mumbled for a few seconds and then shouted "RAVENCLAW!" Ryan ran towards the Ravenclaw table... OOC: done...

OOC: erlk, thought we were doing this in alphabetical, sorry BIC: "Snape, Arienne!" Arienne walked briskly up to the hat, ignoring the mutters and stares of at least half the hall. Her father had not been a popular man. She reached the tall stool and glanced at Professor Clearwater, who didn't lower her eyes quickly enough for Arienne to miss the look of loathing behind them. She sat and swept the battered hat onto her dark head, expecting it to shout out her parents' house almost immediately.
Instead, the voice her mother had warned her about was strangely absent. Arienne held her breath, wondering if something had gone wrong, if maybe even the hat wanted nothing to do with her...Now why would that be? someone cheerfully interrupted her thoughts. Before Arienne could think up a suitably sarcastic answer, the hat continued, Your past does not control your future to the 't', you know. An excellent mind there, lots of Ravenclaw potential...Not afraid to do what you think is right...Forever loyal to those you trust - "I am NOT going into Hufflepuff," Arienne whispered violently, startling a few of the nearer students. The hat chuckled. Righto. It was fun trying though, even given your heritage. I hereby sort thee to SLYTHERIN! The green table erupted into cheers as Arienne stood and made to take the surprisingly un-mouldy fabric off her head - You must right the wrongs of your ancestors. Soon, you will be able to shape your own destiny. Follow your heart, Arienne Riddle of Slytherin.
Arienne took her seat at the end of the table and waited for the Sorting to finish and the food to finally appear. As she settled down and Professor Clearwater called out the next first-year, she suddenly realised: ...Riddle?
OOC: Hehe, intrigue abounding. If it's a totally unwanted and stupid plotline, I'll edit

Kohana looked around, it looked like she was the only person who looked Japanese in the entire hall. She was nervous, 'What will all these kids think of an american at an english school...' She muttered to herself, she looked around, the line infront of her was getting shorter and shorter as people were being sorted. 'Oh man. What am I gonna do?' she said to herself, 'I can't do this, I'm not gonna make any friends, I should have gone back home...'
Kohana looked up she was at the front of the line, 'Shimane, Kohana.' The teacher said.
'Okay, here goes.' Kohana said and walked up and sat on the stool and the hat was put on her head, it was so big on her that it covered right down to her mouth. 'What are the houses again?' Kohana thought, 'I wanna be in Hufflepuff right? No Griffindor!' A bit confused eh? 'What the?!' Kohana said 'What the hell is that voice?!' Not sure what to do are you? Well I know what to do with you, GRIFFINDOR!
Kohana wrenched the hat off her head and went to site at the very back of the hall as far away from all of the other students, 'The further away I get, the longer I can wait until they find out where I'm from...'
Kohana watched as people started to get bored with the sorting and joined in with the cheers when someone joined the Griffindor table, but she was still worried about if someone came to sit with her, 'Okay Kohana, keep you pants on. Even though I'm meant to call them trousers now that I'm in England, I'm not even wearing trousers I'm wearing a skirt, oh baka.'
OCC: soz about this I'm trying to make her a little bit more american, and well the baka at the end is her japanese side taking over...

Ed watched the blushing girl go up as she was called, and was sorted into Ravenclaw. Her name turned out to be "Karys Feria", which he muttered under his tongue, grinning as exotic thoughts entered his mind. After a while, his name was called. "Venard, Edward" walked towards the stool, chewing a lip uncertainly. His wand poked out of his sleeve, softly nudging his arm with every step. He really felt like levitating himself over there, or teleporting, just to impress. But he restrained himself, and sat down on the stool, the hat being placed on top of his head. It fell neatly in front of his eyes, making him jump slightly. Hmmmmm... What a strange mind... came the hats voice, but this did not make Ed jump. He was expecting it. He was also ready to receive any comments about dark magic, necromancy and pasts he didn't even know about. However, the hat surprised him. I may have met your family before, but you are different. Let's put you somewhere you belong, not your family - RAVENCLAW! The hat was tugged free of his head, and Ed walked over shakily to sit beside Karys.

Arienne jumped half a foot as the Vernard boy took his place in Ravenclaw - Ravenclaw?! What in Merlin's name is he doing there? She turned to stare at the tall boy on the other side of the Hall; and, in doing so, lost her hold on the Griffindor-crested plate in front of the Japanese first-year, letting it crash to the table and crack. Hardly noticing the gasps of shock as the other Griffindors watched the plate reform itself - Professor Granger must have sent a quick Patellae Reparo over - Arienne concentrated on Edward for a moment longer, subconsciously admiring his hair... Eventually, she returned to examining the other students and teachers, wondering who would be hell to live with - and who she'd easily manipulate.
OOC: Okay, just need Katie & Rosie now...

Kohana had been watching a Slytherine girl who had been looking in her direction, "Aw man. Am I being judged already?!" she looked around quickly, "Oops, said that too loud, now everyone knows..." Kohana looked back at the girl, she had turned to look at a Ravenclaw boy, "Oh well, as long as I'm here, I might aswell try to fit in..."
Kohana, was quickly distracted from the sorting to stare at the goblet on the table, "We didn't have these back home, this is so different..."

Ed picked up his plate, examining it carefully. Then, throwing it casually into the air, he pointed his finger at it. Silently, the plate turned briefly into a wad of £20 notes, then into a chicken, then back into a plate. Smiling, he levitated it back to his place and leant back on a non-existant head rest. The school ghosts seemed to be ignoring him, which he thought was rather natural behaviour towards necromancers. He grinned. At least he wasn't in Slytherin... Like that girl who kept staring at him. She knew who he was, probably. Hopefully she thought he was hot. Still grinning, he waited for the Sorting to finish.

The huge doors to the great Hall burst open, heads turned and unwanted attention was attracted to a tallish, fair and bright blue eyed girl. Her hair trailed passed her waist and spread behind her as she walked swiftly between the tables. As she walked past, a natural smile on her face, a warm glow seemed to fill the hall. Goodness, happiness and joy spread to everyone she passed. She joined the ever shortening queue for the sorting hat, trying to avoid being stared at by all eyes in the hall.

Dwyn looked over her shoulder at the strange new girl who'd just arrived, almost missing when her name was finally called out.
Ahh! That's me! she nearly jumped out of her shoes, quickly making her way through the remaining students up to the stool one 'Professor Clearwater' stood by with the Sorting Hat. "Here we go..." Dwyn whispered to herself as she took a seat and waited. The next thing she knew the hat had been pushed down over her head and the world went dark.
So, you're here to find yourself, eh? ... Interesting, interesting! said a strange voice she now knew belonged to none other than the Sorting Hat. Dwyn didn't say anything, her jaw clenched tightly as her hands trembled against her knees. A long, hard road lies ahead indeed, but I can see the strength you'll need burning inside your heart... Yes, I know exactly where you belong... There was a slight pause that made Dwyn's heart stop, and then suddenly-GRYFFINDOR!
Dwyn immediately pulled the hat off as the sound of cheering erupted in her ears, looking over to find the current Gryffindor students clapping wildly. She quickly made her way over to the long table and took a seat at the end, staring at the new faces and raising a shaky hand, "H... Hi! Nice to meet you..."

Arienne peeled her eyes off Ed and stared instead at the last girl in the line. All that happiness radiating off her...ugh. Arienne hurridly replaced the relaxed smile that was creeping onto her face with her customary scowl and glared at the girl's back, stifling a shudder at the beautiful, almost too perfect tresses falling halfway down it. There was definitely something strange about her, a kind of aura that she couldn't place, even given her extensive magical knowledge...Aware that she wasn't the only one watching the Aryan-looking girl - more than half the staff table had started muttering as soon as she entered - Arienne turned her attention back to Ed. It seemed that all three of the strange students had their own unique and powerful backgrounds; it would only be a matter of time before she worked out - Ziarre? Or is it Zairre? The teacher's conversation had reached a climax, and Professor Granger sent a subtle glare round the table before motioning for Professor Clearwater to continue.

Kohana looked at the girl who was now sitting closest to her, "Oh no... now what..." said mumbled, "Please let it nearly be over, please."
Kohana looked at Dwyn, "Maybe it'll be alright, maybe..." she zoned out and stared at her plate until she could be sure it was over.

Ziarre's bright blue eyes scanned the staff table, innocently, and met with Professor Granger's for a second, a the smile growing slightly. As the mumbling died away Ziarre waited patiently for her name to be called. She felt almost a little alone, standing there by herself, but she should be used to it by now, having been that way all her life. "And Finally Ziarre" announced the professor when silence had fallen, only to be broken again by more mumbling and muttering about the girl's lack of surname. Ziarre slowly walked to the stool, sat down and felt the light weight of the sorting hat on her head. Ah.... a pure one.... the sorting hat said only to her "Please don't put me in slytherin even though I'm pure!" she mumbled desperately not slytherin eh? well probably best not to... You wouldn't fit in. You certainly have the knowledge to be in Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff certainly isn't for you. But Gryffindor..... hmmmm... interesting dilemma.... but the hat seemed to have made it's decision and after leaving the suspense to mount for a few moments shouted "GRYFFINDOR!" Ziarre jumped up and nearly skipped to the Gryffindor table. She didn't want questions asked but she did want to make friends, and she'd have to get asked them some time...

As Ziarre and Professor Clearwater took their seats, Professor Granger rose; the half-hearted applause and violent mutterings ceased immediately. Hermione smiled inwardly: she was finally getting used to her challenging post. "Welcome, students and staff, new and old, to another year of Hogwarts. Before the feast begins, I have a few announcements to make.
"Firstly, a hearty welcome back for Professor Lupin, who has kindly agreed to return to teach Defence Against the Dark Arts. I'm sure you will enjoy his guidance as much as he enjoys your company." She turned to smile at her former professor as he stood and acknowledged the cheers filling the hall.
"Next, I'd like to remind all students that the Forbidden Forest is out of bounds, unless you are accompanied by Professor Firenze." The centaur towards the end of the staff table gave a nod; Professor Granger's gaze travelled round the hall, each recipient cringing slightly.
"Also, Madam Hooch and the House Quidditch Captains will be running Quidditch trials for all years: these will start next Monday. Please could all existing members see her after the feast.
"And finally," Hermione grinned at everyone, "happy new school year! Enjoy the feast!" As the plates filled with delicious food, Hermione sat and picked a few morsels for herself. She still didn't like the idea of elves slaving away in the kitchens, but she'd come to realise that they were a part of magical life. The magical world had accepted her, a Muggle-born, all those years ago; it wasn't right to reject the aspects of magic that she didn't like. She smiled, and chatted the feast away.
OOC: Hermione's feelings about house-elves are taken from 'Nobody Told Me There'd Be Days Like These' by Subversa on Mugglenet Fanfiction.

Ed looked at Ziarre, grinning as he pointed at her clothes under the table. A soft spark of magic flew towards them, beginning to unravel her sleeves. The necromancer-in-training turned back to the food, and he levitated quite a few large pieces of meat from the other end of the table, achieving the stares he needed to feel comfortable. Gnawing on a particularly gristly piece, he grinned at Karys through the chunk. His eyes flashed red briefly, then settled down again as a ghost started to float through him. He was quite used to the feeling, his home was populated by enough ghosts to last a millenia. As the ghost continued up the table, making several first years drop their food as it gave them the shivers. The ghost laughed, making its head fall off - partly. The older students laughed as one student through their food into the air, screaming and jumping out of their seat as Nearly Headless Nick swooped through.
Scanning the hall after finishing all his meat, his eyes rested on the Slytherin girl again. she seemed to like staring at him, so he stared back, putting some of his powers into it to make his eyes glow red again. His blue highlights swept themselves back into place as he grabbed a chicken sandwich.

Ziarre, immediately sensing the magic being used on her, clicked her fingers, stopping and mending the unraveling on her sleeves. Looking around she saw the boy who had cast the spell showing off in front of the whole house, if not the whole hall. Her eyes glittered and caught his for a moment. She turned back around to the feast, allowing her blonde hair to swing across her back. Politely Ziarre took some salad and vegetables and tried to avoid the stares coming from all around the hall.

Kohana looked at the girl who had been last to sit down, then to her plate, the girl looked strange to Kohana, "Maybe, just maybe she'll take no notice of my accent... I hope." Kohana looked at the girl, she seemed to be enjoying her food, "Erm... Hi, you're Ziarre right?" Kohana said with her strong accent, "I'm Kohana, please don't judge me on my accent, I'm here to learn not to cause trouble!" Kohana said quickly before anyone could say anything.
