Ziarre smiled "Now why would I do that? It's good that Hogwarts is attracting people from all over the world." she turned back to her plate for a moment before adding, a little sheepishly, "What's your name? I wasn't here at the beginning you see."

"I'm Kohana, man I wish we were allowed to were pants... I mean trousers." Kohana blushed when she saw heads turn when she got her vocabulary mixed up, "Oh baka!" Kohana started swearing in japanese before realising even more people were staring at this than her misconception of 'trousers' "Oh and I'm half japanese, if you hadn't guessed, my mum comes from Osaka and my dad from California" Kohana smiled then turned to her plate.

Ed turned his stare to a glare when Ziarre caught his eye, then turned back to his food frowning. This girl was very different. Glancing up at her, his eyes flashed purple this time, allowing him to see the tail-tale magical aura around every student. Then, looking down at his plate, he grinned again. Karys was looking at him with questioning eyes, aware that his had changed into two completely different colours. He shrugged at her, then returned to his thoughts. It was just as he'd suspected. Ziarre had a different colour aura, and it was much larger than most people's... Excluding his own, some of the teacher's and a few other students... as well as the Slytherin girl who kept looking at him. So many people were different, stronger or more durable than every other "normal" student.
His head jerked up as Professor Granger tapped the staff table with her spoon for attention. 'Has everyone had their fill of dinner?' The many enthusiastic nods confirmed her suspicions as she smiled, some students stuffing the last of their dinner into their mouths. Most of the first years just nodded, patting full stomachs. 'Then let dessert be served!'
The main course disappeared abruptly, and the students' plates emptied themselves as the many trifles, muffins, doughnuts, yoghurts, etc filled the tables. Ed gazed open-eyed at the food, then scooped up some chocolate sauce onto one side of the plate putting a few turkish delights on the other side. Filling the rest of his plate with muffins, cakes and everything else he could was quite easy to do, especially as he managed to levitate a heart-shaped cake with red icing from right underneath a fourth year's nose. Splitting it in half, he gave the bigger part to Karys, making her blush as he dug in.

Ziarre's relaxed smile broke into a wider one as a large tub of natural yoghurt appeared in front of her. The girl's eyes widened as she took large spoonfuls of her favourite desert ever. After giving herself a healthy helping Ziarre delicately took her spoon and politely took small spoonfuls of yoghurt, savoring the taste.

"Ziarre, do you think tha- HEY OH YEAH! JAPANESE DOHNUTS!" Kohana was suddenly hyper when she realised that her favourite desert had appeared in front of her along with a small plate of sushi. "It's just like being back home, I've only lived here a year, in England I mean, I thought I'd have had to go back home, I didn't even know about this place! But they know how to please a japanese-american!"
OCC: this is where I'd put in a chibi pic if i was doing this as manga!

Arienne glanced across at Ed's showing off and rolled her eyes. No, he wouldn't like you either, a snide voice whispered in her head. She brushed it away and turned back to her plate, clearing her thoughts away completely and repressing all her fears, her hopes, her wonderings, until her mind was as empty as the dish before her. Good. Then she began working on her aura, gently scrubbing away at the edges and replacing them with a kind of shield, so that no-one would see her unless they looked specifically for Arienne Snape - or is it Riddle now? Her defences wavered slightly as she crushed the annoying little voice and finished her shield. Almost done. She muttered a few well-practised incantations and felt her magical signature gather and concentrate as a small snake-like scar appaeared on the back of her right hand. Now when she cast spells with her left hand, they wouldn't leave a magical mark - people like Ed Vernard shouldn't be able to feel her presence.
Well, hopefully.
Arienne smiled and transported a bit of Black Forest gateau onto her plate.
*
By the end of the feast, many of the first-years were unable to leave their seats and had to be helped up by understanding second-years while most of the older students giggled at the "ickle firsties." Professor Clearwater gave out a few trivial notices before asking the prefects to lead the way to the House Common Rooms and dormitories.
Arienne swept a few stray crumbs off her robes and joined the crowd heading for the dungeons under the lake. She thought she'd glimpsed the enchantments as she rode across in the little rickety boats, and if her intiuition was correct, the Slytherin rooms were not extravagant...She grinned as she prepared to slip away...
OOC: Nooo! Someone stop her quick! I might do timetables for each house if I'm bored. Let's say September 2nd is a Monday, just for convenience. I think Griffindors get Friday afternoons off - I'll probably extend that to all first-years.

Ed frowned as Karys fell over the bench trying to get up. Catching her with a quick charm, he helped her step over it after he'd stopped the people next to him from falling on top of him as they tried to rise. Noticing Arienne slipping away, he swept a small charm over to a plate next to where she was standing, attracting as much attention as possible in her direction. Smiling, he put one arm around Karys' shoulders and followed the rest of the Ravenclaw students.

"Come along now, first years! This way to the Griffindor house common room!" A tallish boy called out as he stood by the end of the table. He had a large badge pinned to the front of his robes that Dwyn couldn't make out, but it appeared to set him apart as someone special.
With a collection of mutters, excited squeals, and groans from students being sickly full, the slowly table emptied and the students formed a group around the boy. Finally when it appeared everyone was ready, the boy announced again, "Alright. And off we go! Do remember to keep up now." And so he turned and began to lead the students out of the Great Hall and into the corridors of Hogwarts.
Since Dwyn had already been seated at the far end of the table it was a simple matter for her to hang back to follow at the end of the line. She hadn't talked much during the feast, instead listening to everyone else's conversations to see what she could pick up on them. One particular girl had made her smile. The Japanese-American "Kohana" seemed to be very paranoid about her background, yet Dwyn herself had lived outside of Europe in British Columbia, Canada, as long as she could remember. Somehow she'd managed to keep a British accent from listening to her parents but her dialogue certainly didn't match a born-n'-raised Englishmen.
We'll see how soon they figure it out, she thought with a soft giggle.
"Up we go!" the tall boy suddenly called out as she began to ascend the nearest stairway, students scurrying after him so not to be left behind.
Guess I better hurry up. Wouldn't want to get lost in this place on my first day, Dwyn thought nervously as she made her way after the others. Suddenly a quick jolt shot through her body and she almost tumbled off her feet. She could feel her body go numb with fright; her mind a frenzy of thoughts. What was that!? I've never felt anything like it! The next thing she knew her hands began to tingle as if something were crawling under her skin. She stared at them in horror, clasping them together and holding them close to her body. Is it one of those ghosts? she questioned, but with a quick scan of the area none appeared to be present.
But then, as soon as it'd hit, the tingling faded and she could feel her body returning to its usual state. She sighed heavily with relief, giving her head a shake and murmuring quietly to herself, "It was... probably just a panic attack. Not that I've ever had one quite like that before... Oi. This place is going to be the death of me."
Sighing again and looking off to where her group had disappeared, she heard students talking in the distance that she was sure belonged to the other Griffindors. Dwyn gazed around the corridor one last time but found nothing too suspicious, and picking up her robes she hurried up the stairs to catch the others.

OOC: slight autoing but checks first with Katie
BIC: Ziarre obediently followed the prefect as he lead the first years up staircase after staircase. They passed paintings which greeted them and ghosts that sneered, each of which were met with worried whispers and sometimes shrieks of fright, or laughter. Ziarre was nearer the back of the group as they climbed slowly and caught sight of Dwyn, the only person she'd seen sorted, looking worried. "Hey Dwyn!" she shouted back at the girl "Hurry up or you'll get left behind!" she continued, giggling as Dwyn ran to catch up. "So.... did you bring a pet to Hogwarts? I love magical creatures. I can't wait for Care of Magical Creatures!"

As Dwyn finally caught up she was a bit surprised by the sudden question, but after the experience she'd just had she figured chatting would help push it out of her mind.
"A pet? I didn't even know we could bring one..." the girl replied a bit disapointedly, thinking about the furry friend she'd left behind when coming here. "The only pet I have at home is an overly large rat, and they wouldn't allow rodents as pets here... Would they?"

"I don't see why not!" Ziarre replied as they left the staircases and were lead to a large painting of a rather large lady. "Hello new Griffindors. Have a good year here at Hogwarts but don't wake me up a obscene hours when you should be in bed! The new password is Unicorn. Don't forget it now or you won't be able to enter." The portrait swung forward, showing a large hole in the wall. "This is the Griffindor common room" the prefect explained. A large room with many tables and chairs for working, decorated mainly in red with a roaring fire in the corner in the corner and a few comfy arm chairs near it. "Boys dorms are up the right staircase" The prefect said gesturing to a doorway "And the girl's on the left" he said pointing at another. "Your belongings will be next to your beds. Enjoy!"

Kohana didn't need to be told twice, she rushed forwards and was first up the girls stairway, she found the dorm she was to sleep in and unpacked the things she needed. "Well as long as I'm here, I might as well get some practise. Lumos!" Kohana's wand lit up the dorm while she took out a book from her bag and started to read it while she waited for the other girls to come.

"Are there any candles in here?" Ziarre asked, climbing the stairs and looking around the room. She didn't want just wands to light up their room and since she didn't have one, and did not want to publicize that fact, she thought it was best if fire provided the answer. Finding one on the windowsill and on each bedside table she immediately lit them, by only breathing on them, and handed one to Kohana saying "I still don't know your name. Or if you have any pets with you." and sitting down on her own bed.

"I'm Kohana, I have my cat with me, her name is Hisa, it's a Japanese name meaning long-lasting." Kohana said "I sometimes have an owl with me two, if it's not with my parents, he's called Tsubasa, that's japanese for wings." She smiled at Ziarre, "You don't have a wand do you. It's okay if you don't, the guys who sells them will be downstairs tomorrow selling them, mine's made with silver-birch wood with a unicorn hair inside it." Kohana put down her book, it was manga, she looked back at the page she had just been reading and closed the book quickly before anyone could see it, "I was allowed to watch much ruder stuff in a america and japan than they show on the TV over here."

Ed followed the long line, winding their way around the many staircases. They were all caught off guard when the staircase they were climbing abruptly swung free of its bindings, carrying them round to a new landing. When they stopped, Ed had to struggle not to fall over the side himself, but he had to stop several others from landing on top of him at the same time. Pushing other first years off him, he helped Karys up and proceeded up the staircase. The prefect was already moving on to the next moving staircase.
After a good few staircases and more close calls, the new Ravenclaw students reached the West tower of Hogwarts. The prefect stood in front of the wall, tapped it with his wand and said clearly: 'Levo ianua!' The stones began to melt away, forming a small rectangular portal into the common room. The prefect turned to face them. 'The girls' dormitories are on the right. Boys' on the left. Your luggage is already there. I suggest you unpack.'

A faint smile wisped across Ziarre's face when Kohana looked at her, but she turned away and to her suitcase a moment later and thought What's a TV? And what if I don't need a wand? Slowly she began to unpack belongings from her trunk to the bedside table and refolding her robes. When Ziarre's fingers brushed upon a different material, one of quality, which loving hands had made, they paused. The brighter coloured garment, the one of the fairy's race, almost brought a tear to Ziarre's eye when she saw it. The thought of the few fairies still remaining in the world saddened her deeply. Gently she folded the garment and placed it lovingly at the bottom of the trunk.

After taking a nice, long look around the cozy red common room Dwyn finally climbed the stairs to the girl's dorm to find Kohana and Ziarre already settling in. She looked around for her own blue trunk and found it sitting at the end of a bed on the far right. "Guess this one's mine..." she murmured as she headed across towards it. Unlatching the clips of her trunk, she popped it wide open and stared at the assortment of things inside. Most of it had been newly bought by her parents the day before in Diagon Alley (OOC: Sorry if I spelled that wrong) - her school supplies and such. She did have a few personal possessions, though: a slightly worn out golden dragon plushie, a photo album, sketch book, spare clothes, and framed pictures of her dad and mom, her three closest friends from elementry school, and her big ol' pet rat, Fuzzy.
"I wonder... Should I bring Fuzzy here?" Dwyn thought a loud as she removed the pictures from the box and set them on the nearest window ledge. She stared particularly at her shot of Fuzzy, displaying him standing next to the family house cat. The body of the rat was the same size as the cat's, if not a touch bigger. Even if he was a rodent the cat never would've even thought to tangle with him. Fuzzy was more or less a peaceful soul, but watch out when he got cranky. If it's allowed, why not? It'd sure make this place feel a bit more like home...
OOC: Crappy, but meh. No inspiration at the moment.

Ziarre finished tidying her belongings and shut her trunk, whispering an inaudible spell to lock it so no one but herself could open it. She looked up at the other two. Dwyn had set up some photos on her windowsill, which Ziarre promptly went over to look at. "You weren't joking about overly large were you?" Ziarre exclaimed. "Is this your family?" she added and thought I wish I had one... regretfully. The fairy girl smiled and walked back over to her bed, changed into her pyjamas and got into her bed. The mattress was soft and the blankets on top of her made her feel warm and cosy. With a flick of a wrist the candle nearest to Ziarre extinguished itself. Curling up in a tight ball she listened to the sounds around to her and tried to relax.

Kohana was now stroking a small lump of fur, it was white and had ears, "You alright Ziarre? You look pale." she got out her wand and tapped a bottle with it and murmered a spell, "You want some? It's cocoa, I can warm it up easily."

"No thanks" Ziarre said with a smile. "I think I just need some rest" but her mind was racing, thinking about the next day. what if I don't make friends? What if my timetable's rubbish? What about my wand, or lack of. Will I get picked on because of that? Don't be silly your a fairy! How can someone even think about that! What about Kira and Duke. What am I going to do about them?..... Slowly these thoughts turned to dreams of flying again. Of being free.....

Ed wandered up to his new dormitory, followed by the other boys sharing a room with him. Theirs was the first door they came to, and they piled in without a word to each other. Ed took the bed by the window, opening the chest underneath it with a quick flourish of his wrist. Throwing some food into it which instantly sealed themselves in small plastic bags that came out of nowhere, he opened the window to let the warm night air in. A slight breeze quickly blew the candles out that one of the boys had lit, making him frown but almost essential for Ed to be comfortable. He'd lived in the dark for most of his life.
Seeing his suitcase in one of the corners of the room, he levitated it over to him so he could pack things away. He floated several photos out of his family: a tall, dark figure wearing thick black gloves and a long coat, an imposing figure wearing similar clothes but wearing jewelled spectacles and a small girl playing with a long knife. There were faint figures in the backgrounds of each of these pictures, each one being a ghost of one of his ancestors. The details were too faint to make out, but Ed knew who they were. The pictures smelt dreadfully of the Dead's touch. Placing these on the windowsill, he grinned and looked around at the other boys. They were watching him silently, with peculiar expressions on their faces. Just like they'd seen a ghost. Ed smiled to himself, and turned back to his suitcase. Next out were his clothes, then bathroom supplies, his Necromancy equipment and some more treasured items. The Necromancy tools were laid out neatly on top of the chest, each with a small lable attached. One of them read: "Oreganian Knife. Use for killing small insects, mammals and fish. May also work on human infants." The knife itself glowed blue ominously, glinting in the moonlight.

"Yep. That's a picture of my mom and dad. It doesn't include my siblings, though," Dwyn had replied to Ziarre's question before the strange girl had turned away looking a bit down. Dwyn eyed her a moment before turning back to her photo, the bright smiles of her parents gleaming as they occasionally waved back at her. Gasping the frame tightly for a moment she ran her fingers over the glass to meet the hands of her parents. Just a year... Just until the summer. Then we'll see each other again... Wish I understood why you didn't want me home for Christmas, though she thought gloomily. Her parents had told her it'd be best if she stayed at Hogwards over the break, and no matter how much she'd pried they wouldn't give her a straight answer why. "It's for the best" was all they'd say. 'The best for who?' is what Dwyn wanted to know.
Finally replacing the photo on the ledge, she stared at Fuzzy's picture one last time and nodded to herself. Tomorrow she'd most definitely be sending a letter to her parents about somehow transporting him there. If the other girls didn't like rats, tough for them. It was all discrimination anyways.
Heading back to her trunk, Dwyn pulled out her sketch book & her pencil case before getting into bed. She gazed over at the other two girl's present and noticed Kohana's casting a spell with her wand. "You seem pretty good at that already," Dwyn spoke to the girl for the first time, digging into the front pocket of her robes to pull out her own new shiny, creamy-colored wand. "I was only fitted with this one yesterday and can’t seem to get the hang of it. The shopkeeper told me it was made from the wood of a white ash along with the scale of a dragon….” Dwyn paused for a moment, remembering the odd conversation she’d had with the slightly eccentric man. “He… he couldn’t tell me what kind of dragon scale it was, just kept going on about how ‘it finally chose a master!’ … If it’s so special I wish it’d actually work. I personally think he ripped us off. Even my last wand worked better than this…”
She glared at the new wand in annoyance. So far with it she hadn’t even been able to manage the simplest of spells correctly, though when using her mom’s old worn out wand she had. Simple lighting and levitation incantations - no problem. At least, no problem then…”Oh well…” she murmured with a shrug. “I’m sure tomorrow one of the professors will be able to figure it out… I wonder what classes will be like?” she added more to herself than the others. After attending a standard muggle elementary school for the past few years she truly didn’t know what to expect from a school like Hogwarts.

"Oooh!" Kohana said, she dropped her cat on the floor by accident, "Oops! Sorry Hisa-chan!" Kohana scooped up Hisa and put her on the bed, "I aint that good, I know a few american spells, and both by parents have shown me a few, but I only know the basics that's you're meant to practice before school."
Kohana looked out of the window, "While we're here, I won't be able to talk to any of my other friends, they aint witches or wizards so I can't keep in contact with them." she looked back into the room, "What'cha drawing? I have my sketch book with me too, I draw with my wand and quill though."

~ Monday, September 2nd ~ Arienne woke up early and sat in bed for an hour, contemplating the previous day. The strange words of the Sorting Hat came to the front of her mind - yet another mystery in her twisted life. Surely I've got enough problems with my family already... Arienne sighed and pulled open the curtains of her luxurious sea-green four-poster bed, gazing at the other four girls in the dormitory. So many people here...she'd been used to the life of loneliness that often came with being different. Even here, many of the students glared at her, or simply ignored her as she walked past. But there were other...interesting...people in her year - that Vernard, for one. The qualities - if you could call them that - of necromancy were certainly more Slytherin-orientated than most; and as for the strange aura of Ziarre... Suddenly Gladys Goyle stirred and literally jumped out of her bed, waking Sallandra Avery - the other daughter of a Death Eater, not that they publicised it - and the rest of the Slytherin first-years. Arienne hid a sly grin and dressed quickly, hurrying from the cold damp dungeons to breakfast in the Great Hall. As she took a seat as far away from the teachers and other students as possible, Professor Clearwater appeared at her side. "Your timetable," she said curtly, and seemed to shoot off to the other side of the hall before Arienne had even touched it. She scanned it quickly, taking little notice of the subjects - of far more interest to her were the houses she would be learning with. Shuddering slightly at the thought of double Potions with Griffindor that afternoon, she tucked the slip of paper inside her robes just as a memo flew under her nose, informing her that a trial Flying lesson would be taking place after lunch. Smiling grimly, Arienne filled her plate with toast and watched the entrances for Vernard and Ziarre. Today was going to be an interesting day.
