Ryan grabbed Ed's hand, and hoisted himself up onto the moving staircase. "Where did she say it was again?"

Meanwhile Ziarre leisurely walked over to the greenhouses where she'd been told that all Herbology lessons took place. She joined the line of chattering Griffindor and Hufflepuff first years and received a few stares from most of them. Patiently she waited for her friends and the teacher to arrive, watching the few fluffy clouds in the sky drift past.

'She said the staircase would take us there. I assume it'll be obvious when we arrive,' Ed replied, as the stairs slid smoothly into their new landing place. Stepping off them, the Ravenclaw swept down the corridor, his hair flowing out behind him. The first door he came to was rather imposing, and he assumed that this was the classroom, as many other first years, both Ravenclaw and Slytherin, were standing outside. Grinning, he joined the queue, and settled down to wait for Ryan to catch up... And Arienne to arrive.

Ryan ran down the corridor and took his place behind Ed. He could hear footsteps echoing down the corridor behind him...

Arienne rolled her eyes at the excited Muggle-born as she passed him to the other side of the door, where the Slytherins were lined up. Many of them shrank away from her, especially those of Death Eater heritage. Ari shrugged and as she got to the end of the queue, the door opened and Professor Granger ushered the first-years in. Her gaze lingered for a while on Ed, then on Ari, who stared straight back. Hermione quickly looked away and returned to the front of the classroom; Arienne grinned, as she'd heard rumours of a certain schoolgirl crush - but no matter, she thought to herself, it's not fair to bring that up.

OOC: Only you would bring that up BIC: Ed followed Arienne in, the dagger still clamped to his leg. Glancing at Professor Granger, he sat silently at the same table as Arienne. Karys ignored him, and sat with some other Ravenclaw girls. He'd obviously lost a friend already. Getting his books out quickly, he threw them onto the desk, sending his quill and ink flying - until he levitated them back swiftly. Then, he looked blankly at the front of the class, ready to begin.

Arienne glared sideways - she'd chosen the desk at the back specifically to avoid everyone, and now the one guy she'd tried to avoid most had placed himself and his stuff right next to her. Stupid, annoying, necromancing male, thinks he can do whatever the hell he wants, just 'cos his girlfriend's already dumped him... Similarly random thoughts raged through her head as Professor Granger performed the almost ritual transfiguration on her desk, producing the usual gasps from all the first-years wondering where on earth that pig came from - all, of course, apart from the two bored ones at the back; one near trembling with frustration, the other near dead with boredom. OOC: Slight auto-ing there - sorry

"Yes! Right on time!" Erin cheered brightly as she came to a halt before the mass of students gathering by the greenhouses. "Didn't I tell you we'd make it?" she laughed, looking around at the girl still caught tightly in her grasp.
"Yes... You sure did...!" Dwyn panted as she fought the urge to fall flat on her face in exhaustion. Slowly lifting her head to see Erin's hand still clamped around her wrist she added, "Would you... be so kind as... to let go of my arm now?"
"Oh? Ah! Yes, yes! Sorry about that!" Erin grinned sheepishly as she released the girl. "The Owlry is quite a ways up, isn't it? I'm glad I could help you send off your letter."
"Yes... Thanks for that..." Dwyn forced a smile, though deep down she wasn't sure whether to thank the red-haired girl or strangle her. The help had been much appreciated, but was it really necessary to drag her the entire way there AND back!?
"Well, nice meeting you again, Dwyn!" Erin said at last, and with a slight wave she turned and walked off to join the mass. Dwyn couldn't help but watch her for a moment as Erin interacted with the others. She seemed to be acquainted with everyone from their house already, opening chatting with everyone - both girls and boys.
Well, not everyone.
Erin, like many of the others, seemed to be avoiding Ziarre's gaze, who was standing silently in the line up of students staring up at the sky. Something about the situation struck a nerve in Dwyn, though she was far too tired to give it much thought. Instead she simply took a few deep breaths and righted herself, staring at Ziarre and thinking, I hope I'm not interrupting anything...
Walking over the stand by the mysterious girl, Dwyn spoke as casually as possible, "Heya, Ziarre! Glad I made it back in time for class ... I wonder when the teacher will arrive?"

Ziarre smiled and her eyes glittered as Dwyn came into sight. "About now!" the girl exclaimed cheerily as the Greenhouse door opened and the pupils were ushered inside by a tall man with scruffy looking hair. They filed into a long greenhouse and stood behind a large bench. Ziarre stood next to Dwyn and a rather scared looking Hufflepuff girl. Her unnaturally blue eyes flew around the greenhouse and she smiled at everyone before turning her attention back to the man standing at the front of the room. The professor introduced himself and gave a brief outline of the course. He said that they would be doing mainly theory at the beginning of the term but in the summer maybe some practical work may be introduced.

OOC: I don't mind Chloe, it fits Ed perfectly Ed watched the demonstration with disinterest, almost falling to sleep. Turning to Arienne, he whispered, 'Hey. I saw you checking me out after the Sorting. What do you want?' in the most discreet manner possible for him. Then, out of boredom, he transfigured his pencil into a dagger with an elegant ivory carving of an eagle for a handle, and back again. Hopefully the spell was too unnoticable to attract the professor's attention- No such luck. Professor Granger caught the tranformation out of the corner of her eye, and strolled through the desks to theirs. 'Pay attention in class, Venard. We're not going to attempt practicals for a while yet, just theories. Yet...' Ed braced himself for the almost inevitable detention. 'That was an excellent transfiguration. Ten points to Ravenclaw.' The professor smiled, and went back to the front of the class, leaving Ed gawping. At least I'm getting points for my house, said the niggling voice at the back of his head. He ignored it, and settled back in his chair.

Arienne scowled, knowing full well that she'd be given more than her fair share of detentions if she were caught showing off. Quickly masking her anger, she returned to her normal blank, slightly eerie look, not caring that it would have no effect on the - Arrogant, berkfaced, vomit-inducing - boy next to her. As Professor Granger continued her lecture, Ari folded her arms and looked anywhere but Ed. "You're a necromancer. And you're not in Slytherin. And..." He's fit? Ari clenched her fists and crushed the thought so hard she saw stars. "...And you're powerful. Even for one of your kind. Am I not allowed to be curious?" she finished in a whisper.

Kohana ran into the greenhouse looking rather flustered, "Sorry I'm late professor, I had to see my head of house." Kohana said and went to sit opposite Ziarre. She looked fairly worried as she sat down.

Ed slumped forwards in his chair, flicking his pencil around the table with his finger. 'Why should I be in Slytherin? I see no reason to be,' he said quietly, trying to ignore the obvious feelings surrounding her. It was just so obvious she thought he was good looking, he didn't even need to see the slight pink blush in her aura 'But I'll take that power comment as a compliment,' he added, approaching absolute silence in his whispers. He also tried to ignore his own feelings for her. Her black hair was so silky, it reminded him of his younger sister. Could she have looked like this if she... He quashed the thought immediately, and his eyes glazed over as he looked at the surrounding auras. All similar apart from his own and this girl's: The mudbloods - no, muggleborns - had a murky brown in amongst the usual magic purple, and the others had mainly purple. Most of the Slytherins also had large black patches, including Arienne, and his own aura. She was right; he should be in Slytherin. He was more than tainted, at any rate, and the only necromancer to attend Hogwarts in a long time. He knew more than he should about the Dark Arts, but dispised the Dark Lord and his followers along with the rest of his family. What was Arienne's surname? Snape? The name was certainly important, but it was the girl he was more interested in instead of her heritage. He was going to try his best to find out more about her, at any rate.

Arienne shrugged - she hadn't quite inherited her parents' talents for witty comebacks - then automatically opened her tatty old textbook and pretended to be absorbed as Professor Granger walked past. After about half a paragraph, she discovered that her head was drooping ever nearer the crumpled pages...Shaking herself upright, she decided to take action. Looking sideways at a similarly lethargic Ed, she turned her wand towards him under the table and thought hard, Convo tacitus! She waited a second or two for the spell to take effect, carefully guarding the uglier memories in her head, then sent out another thought: Can you hear me?

Ed felt the contact blossom in his mind, and quickly closed all undesirable thoughts. Most of these were of death and the usual thoughts of necromancy, but some... They were personal. Hearing Arienne's voice echo in his head, he stared at the open book in front of him until his eyes hurt. Yes, I can hear you, he responded calmly, trying to pry further into the young girl's mind. He knew he shouldn't, but he wanted to know one thing: Was it him she felt for, or just someone in the same room as them? Auras often had several meanings, and he liked to be correct in his interpretation. What is it you'd like to say? he added, attempting to form a distraction from his search.

Arienne smiled for a moment- not that Ed was to know, but she'd never tried the spell on anyone before, and she was immensely pleased that it had worked - then closed down her emotions. Firstly, she replied, STOP F*CKING AROUND IN MY HEAD. She let out a small hiss of satisfaction as her natural defences revealed themselves: vast, venomous serpents in her mind's eye, circling the mental connection. Another second and they were gone, leaving a greenish haze around her memories. Right, Ari continued in a pleasant tone. Well...I was bored, and it's pretty obvious that you were too, she said archly in her mind, quickly turning the page of her textbook as Professor Granger walked past again - Merlin's arse, does she have nothing better to do? she thought in exasperation, only just remembering the Ed in her head.
OOC: gods, why did I put that last line...

"Please take out your text books now and turn to page 239 on Devil's snare." Professor Longbottom said. The greenhouse was filled with rustling as students rummages in their bags for the large text book. "Are you alright Kohana?" Ziarre asked across the table as she flicked thought her own text book. The Hufflepuff girl on Ziarre's side was doing the same but now she had a broad smile across her face. Obviously the good magic radiating off of Ziarre was making a difference to her mood. Maybe more people would begin to notice this too as the year passed.

"Here we go... Devil's Snare," Dwyn murmured to herself once she'd finally found the right page. Her voice must have caught the Professor's attention because he looked straight at her and asked, "You there! Dwyn was it?" "Uh... Yeah. That's me," she replied nervously as she looked up from her book. "Would you please read the first paragraph for us?" "Oh! Yes. Of course," Dwyn almost yelped, having thought she'd done something wrong. She cleared her throat and read aloud, "Devil's Snare is composed of a mass of soft, springy tendrils and vines that possess some sense of touch. It uses its creepers and tendrils to ensnare anyone who touches it, binding their arms and legs and eventually choking them. The harder a person struggles against Devil's Snare, the more faster and tightly it binds them; if they relax, it will not kill them as quickly. Devil's Snare prefers a dark, damp environment and shrinks away from fire, so a well-placed flame spell such as Bluebell Flames will drive it away from its victims..." (OOC: Source - Harry Potter Lexicon). "Thank you, Dwyn," the Professor replied happily, "Now then, who wants to read next...?" A Hufflepuff boy was chosen and began to read on, his words sounding distant and muffled as the girl stared at her book lost in thought. Bluebell Flames... Sounds like a handy incantation to know... I wonder how extensive our spell classes will be first year? OOC: Like I said to Rosie, the problem with doing a fanfic-ish RP is that it's hard to actually direct the classes. So yeah... Expect me to be quoting various websites for help.

Having read a lot about Devil's Snare, and many other plants for that matter, and even encountered it Ziarre became bored quickly. Her mind wondered and settled on her previous conversation with Ed. How much did he know? Why did he want to be friends with her? She wanted to know and guessed the necromancer would probably be bored in whatever subject he was in. Pickling up her quill she pretended to be taking notes but instead concentrating hard on the piece of parchment she was "writing" on. Needing no incantation for any spell she had to use the fairy traced letters on the paper, but no ink on the end of her quill. If her magic worked, which it always did, the words "meet me by the lake after flying. Ziarre" would write themselves on the parchment or book nearest Ed for a few seconds.

As the class continued Dwyn found herself becoming more and more impressed by the material. The first Charms class hadn't surprised her much - she'd been expecting a lot more to be truthful - but this one was reminding her just how little she knew about the world of magic. For once this feeling wasn't a burden, though. It made her realize more that this was the right place to be at this point in her life.
Back home her family had taken part in some wizarding traditions - the learning of wizarding history, use of spells and enchanted artifacts - but they'd always been very detached in ways, too. Dwyn had grown up in a regular muggle neighborhood with muggle friends. It'd felt natural attending one of their elementary school's and not a one of them ever would have guessed her family's secret. Heck, they'd even had a television, telephone, and computer - all very muggle-related devices from what she'd heard. Sometimes she wasn't even sure where the non-magic world ended and wizarding world began.
All she knew about the wizarding world thus far she'd learned from her parents and siblings. They weren't very chummy with other wizarding families nor sought them out when it wasn't necessary. Her parents were perfectly content living their secluded lives without anything more than a daily newspaper connecting them to their heritage.
I guess I should be glad that they sent me to Hogwarts at all, Dwyn thought with a smirk, though she knew that was one part of the wizarding world her parents had always held strong beliefs about. For them Hogwarts was as necessary a part of any young wizard or witches life as breathing. They had both attended it themselves years back, and nothing would change their minds about its worth. "No other school can compare!" they'd say.
But then something else came to Dwyn. If her parents still felt so strongly about Hogwarts, why had they basically broken off ties with the rest of the magical realm?
I've never really thought about that before... the girl thought with a verbal "Hmm." She then shrugged her shoulders, though, and admitted reluctantly to herself, It's not like they'd tell me anyways, staring back at the Professor to take in the rest of the lesson.

Ed glared at Arienne's snake guardians mentally, and readjusted his eyes to the world around him. The textbook seemed to be... adding a note to itself. Leaning closer, he read the message- and quickly shielded it with his hand, going slightly red. Burying the thoughts springing up far down in the depths of his mind, trying to keep it secret from the prying (and swearing) thoughts of Arienne. I suggest you get the hell out of my head, then, he thought loudly, summoning the haunts in his mind. Images of rotting corpses sprang up, crossing the connection and bringing more force into the Slytherin's mind. Keeping a straight outer face, Ed simply turned the page of his book, hiding the message and letting him slip into a more forceful state of mind, sending his guards further into the depths of the girl's mind.

The rest of the lesson passed without interest, apart from a griffindor nearly getting strangled by Devil's Snare because they touched it for a dare. All of the students filed out of the greenhouses, as Professor Longbottom smiled at them, look a little disheveled after having to use a spell in the first herbology lesson of the year. Ziarre, who has restrained trying to help the griffindor and professor wither her own, more powerful, magic, followed the long time of students up to the castle and into the fining hall. They were some of the first in there and were watched, like a falcon's prey, by the staff. Ziarre sat down next to some other Griffindors and waited for her friends to join her.

"Sorry I didn't talk in the lesson, I was thinking." Kohana looked at her two friends, "Professor Weasley asked me, well, she said if I had any spare time she wants me to take extra lessons in learning english spells with her cos I know most of the basic american spells." Kohana looked at her feet and sat down next to Ziarre, "I have a lesson with her next instead of with you, I have to learn the english equivalent to the american spells I learned from my mum and dad."
Kohana looked down at the floor and didn't talk much. It was as if she'd been hit over the head with a brick, "She also said that I can't use any japanese spells while I'm here, but I don't think that's fair! I mean, I'm from a different country, how can I not use the spells I already know!"

Decaying cadavers? Pur-lease. I used to sleep with these thi- Arienne let out a mental gasp at Ziarre's note, admiring and despising her at the same time. Just as the bell rang for lunch, Ari savagely broke the connection and the remaining mind guardians on either side vanished. "So, two-timing already on your second day?" she said loudly, making sure the Ravenclaw girls could hear her. "Something tells me Karys won't be too happy," she spat, stalking out the door.
By the time she'd reached the Great Hall, Ari had calmed down considerably and was quite looking forward to the afternoon. She seated herself right at the end of the table, near to the door and far away from the teachers and other students. Who needs friends anyway, she thought bitterly, they'll only abandon you and betray you at the end.
